Where Shall I begin? ...

What is CHARACTER?

According to The All Nations English Dictionary, the word "character" refers to the part of a person that makes one different from anyone else. It reflects ones honesty, integrity and morals. It further shows ones motive, emotion, words, actions and relationships. Character includes both the visible and the invisible part of our identity.

A good example of character is a tree. A tree has two parts: one above the ground and the other below. What we can see is the braches and leaves, but the roots remain invisible. Character is like the roots that you can't see directly but reflects itself in the part of the tree that we can see. Some trees, while still having beautiful branches and leaves, collapse. Why? Because they don't have strong roots or may have sometimes dead roots. You might think that you have a good tree only until the root imposes its deadness on the entire tree.

Why Is Character So Important?

Everything begins with being not doing. In the world that we live in today, you are as important as how and what you can perform. Therefore, people spend their entire life trying to be the best performer in town. Basically, acting does not demand you to have a real character as long as you can forge it. It is a double life. Whenever needed, you will pull out your mask. This kind of life-style will leave us empty, miserable, unsatisfied and hopeless. That is why God wants us to partake of His divine character through Christ Jesus.

This how God begins the process. 1 John 5:1, "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him." God's intention was not to help us act as God's children but to BE God's children. Though our journey begins here, our destination is "Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians. 4:13). How beautiful and precious is our destiny?

A godly character enables us to run the race till the end. For instance, let's take an athlete who is determined to win the marathon gold medal in the Olympics. To begin with, he should be an athlete. Being one demands discipline to exercise their body everyday day, have a balanced diet, rest properly, persevere, and so on. Because of his goal, he will form certain behaviors which will lead him to character development. Unless he has the right character, his destiny will be jeopardized. Take heart! You will always achieve more when you lead your life with a godly character.

The Right Balance in Life

"For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;  To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues." (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23)

Have you noticed that the gift of the Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit are both nine in number when they are mentioned? What does this say to us today? It shows us that in life, one without the other is a wreck. You can have power but if you don't apply it with love, it's going to be devastating. This is the reason why you cannot fulfill the vision that God has placed in you, without allowing God to shape your character. Whenever you go through character formation, pain is involved, therefore, be determined to finish the cycle by God's grace. It may be time for some to enter the cycle or for the others to overcome every discouragement and carry on with the process.

King David, a man after God's own heart, beautifully articulated this process in Psalm 66:10-12, "For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins. Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place." Isn't that exhilarating? Remember, everything is for a season so let us not be weary in well doing.

Where Shall I start?

It begins in Galatians 5:16-26. Learn some of the first steps you can make towards the formation of a godly character.

1.   Crucify the flesh with affections and lusts. "And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." (Galatians 5:24). What action did men of God take in such a case?

a.   Galatians 4:30 - "Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman." Notice that this was his own son from Hagar but out of God's covenant.

b.  In Exodus chapter 32, you read the tragic story of the Israelites on Sinai mountain. After 40 days of fasting and prayer, Moses came down from the mountain with the ten commandments on two tablets. He found out that the people were so impatient  and already made their own god, a golden calf. Watching as they worship the idol, Moses was so enraged and said the following words, "And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour." (Exodus 32:27) Again, you can see the burning zeal of Moses for his God. The people who were killed were his own people.

c.  Paul, who was so determined to finish the race, made this statement upon himself saying, "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." (1 Corinthians 9:27)

2.    Walk in the Spirit. "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." Galatians 5:25

a.       Set your heart on the things above. "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:1-2)

b.       Set your mind on the things above. "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." (Romans 8:6)

c.       Be willing to go through the process. "And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together." (Romans 8:17)
