The Quest for Holiness ... “Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed." Rev. 15:4In this high-tech generation that we are living in, owning a cell phone is almost becoming mandatory. And one of the things that determines the quality of a service is when we can get a full bar connection. Likewise, being a Christian is not enough, for it is God’s heart to lead a holy Christian life. Living an unholy life is like having a bad connection on your cell phone. Holiness creates an atmosphere for God to move in us and through us. For many, the word “Holy” is a myth or something that they cannot be part of. The word “holiness” along with its root word “holy” is mentioned over 600 times in the Holy Bible. In 1 Peter 1:15 God says, “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do …” as He spoke to Israel thousands of years ago in the Old Testament (Leviticus 19:2). Once you are born again, God is calling us to holiness. According to Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary, the word “holy” is defined as – moral and ethical wholeness or perfection; freedom from moral evil. Holiness is a standard that the Lord demands from His people both in the Old and New Testaments. And you might say, “It is impossible!” Yes, it is impossible when you try it alone but when you allow the Holy Spirit to work in you, it’s a different story! How Can I lead a holy life? The bible admonishes and advises us on how to live holy. Holiness is not just a set of rules but it is a life-style lead by the Holy Spirit. 1. 2 Corinthians 7:1 reads “Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”a. Live a life according to God’s word. “… let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit ...” – It all begins with our willingness to start the journey of holiness. Our desire to be pure will move God to complete it in us. Notice in this verse that whatever affecting you affects both your body and spirit. Purify yourselves with the word of God. There is a very interesting verse in Ephesians 5:25-27, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.”b. Fear God. “…perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” – The second point we need to go over is that we need to have the fear of God. (Proverbs 1:7) Please take time to look in to the following verses in your Bible to find out the benefits of the fear of the Lord.· A refuge for yourself and your children. (Proverbs 14:26)· Abundant life and escape from death. (Proverbs 14:27)· Your little is enough. (Proverbs 15:16)· You will avoid evil. (Proverbs 16:6)· A place of rest. (Proverbs 19:23)· It is a source of wealth, horror and life. (Proverbs 22:4) · A sure hope for your future. (Proverbs 23:17-18) · It is a key to unlock your treasure. (Isaiah. 33:6) · Source of strength, encouragement and growth. (Acts 9:31) 2. Do not make light of the Lord’s discipline. (Hebrews 12:4-13) The very reason the Lord chastises His children is that that we may share in His holiness. Learn to know the difference between God’s discipline and the schemes of the enemy. So often we think that the enemy is giving us a hard time while the Lord is chastising us.3. Pursue Holiness. In Hebrews 12:14 the bible says, “Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” If holiness is the life style that allows us to see God and if we have not seen the Lord, how can we tell the world what we didn’t see in the first place? I encourage you reader to run after God and dwell in His presence. Get in to the word of God and prayer!Raise the bar of holiness and let God in this end time use you to impact your generations and generations to come. Let me close with this wonderful verse from 1 Peter 2:9,
