One of the most powerful and unidentified instrument that ushers in, both negative and positive impact into our world, is the word of our mouth. Many are victims of the tongue because they underestimate its power. Jesus said in Matt. 12:36-37, “But I tell you, on the day of judgment men will have to give account for every idle (inoperative, nonworking) word they speak. For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced.” (Amplified Version) How much thought have you ever had given to what you are saying? An ignored enemy is one that destroys your life, though sometimes, it looks insignificant to notice. That is why the Apostle James reminded us that “Even so the tongue is a little member, and it can boast of great things. See how much wood or how great a forest a tiny spark can set ablaze!” (James 3:5)

The story of our existence began with a spoken word according to Genesis 1:3, “Then God said…” You can read the entire Bible and you will observe that God does nothing until He speaks. A spoken word has a creative power. This is not only true with God but also with us. I want you to look at the following verses on how our words govern our life.

  1. Weapon of Destruction or Deliverance. “The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.” (Proverbs 11:9) Notice that words are so powerful that they can affect lives. You can break or mend with words. Open your mouth to speak words that heals the broken hearted. Speak words of restoration, deliverance, hope and wisdom.

  2. The word of our mouth is like a sword. “There is one who speaks like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health.” (Proverbs 12:18) The word of our mouth has also the potential to bring infirmity or health into our body. Many people choose to talk about their sickness at any given time. But do you know that you can talk about the promises of God that are mentioned in the Bible in regards to your healing? In the remaining days of your life, testify about the goodness of the Lord, stand upon the promises of God and declare that God is your HEALER.

  3. Destruction begins in your spirit — all because of words. “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.” (Proverbs 15:4) I want to remind you that what you say does not only affect what’s on the outside but also what’s on the inside of you. That is why we need to let words of life spring out of our mouth even in the most distressful moments of our life. You always create an atmosphere by the words of your mouth. I am not for “positive thinking” but for “biblical thinking”.

  4. The “Produce” of your tongue. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21) This verse, I believe, is one of the most important verses in the Bible. Imagine, death and life are in the power of your words! According to this verse, your life is directly related to what you choose to speak. This is the reason why the devil wants us to live in the cycle of complaining, murmuring and backbiting. Your word is a seed! You harvest only from what you have sown. Jesus said, "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. … The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.” (Matthew 12:33, 35)

I believe you ought to open your mouth to bring deliverance, administer healing, mend broken hearts and speak life. You might ask yourself, “What shall I say?” I strongly encourage you to declare the word of the Lord to every situation you face in life. For every challenge we face there is a promise written in the Bible! SPEAK LIFE AND LIVE RIGHT!

God bless you!
